The Unrelenting Attack on Masculinity – Why?

HEADLINE: College Students: Masculinity Is ‘Extremely Toxic To Our Mental Health’

‘Masculinity can be extremely toxic to our mental health, both to the people who are pressured to perform it and the people who are inevitably influenced by it.’ OCTOBER 4, 2016 By Bre Payton

A group of Claremont College students hosted an event where they discussed why masculinity is triggering and “toxic.” The event, “Masculinity + Mental Health,” was organized by a group of women called “Thrive,” who aim to provide a “safe space” for students to discuss mental health, Steven Glick of The Claremont Independent wrote. For the rest of this go to

This is latest kooky stuff coming out of the ivory halls of “higher learning,” from whence came the continuously unfolding confusion of political correctness. Because of PC we’re not sure what to call each other because some people can’t figure out what their identity is. Now, we have laws that allow people, male or female, or what they choose to be at any given moment in time, to visit the opposite gender’s (whatever that is) restroom. Wow, this was genius.

So, let me get this straight, all men who fall into the masculine category – or who at least identify themselves as masculine – have become toxic for the rest of society? I never thought of myself as “pressured to perform it,” as the article above asserts. If you give a little boy a choice between a truck (I can hear Sam Elliot’s voice in the background – think Ram truck commercials), and a female baby doll, he’ll choose a truck nine times out of 10. He must have felt pressured… Uh-huh.

Defining Masculinity

  • Douglas Wilson in his book Father Hunger – “True masculinity is the humble, glad assumption of God given responsibility.”
  • God ordains and describes the roles, and the job requirements attached to them.
  • Men humbly and gladly accept these roles and requirements and walk in them by His grace.
  • Masculinity and authority flow to those who accept responsibility and flee from those who shirk responsibility.

Men and Women Are Different

  • In order to truly understand biblical masculinity we MUST understand that men AND women were/are created in the image of God. We are the same and equal in this regard (Gen. 1:26-27). But we can easily see that we are wired differently. We have different desires, different ways of communicating, and different ways of dealing with issues. You can see this in kids. They do not have to be taught these tendencies, they just are.”

This basic understanding of masculinity and femininity is why a growing segment of this society is confused about its roles. It’s confused about identity, Who God is and how He created us male and female. He wasn’t confused when He created you and me because He is a God of order:

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (1 Cor. 14:33).

In 1 Corinthians 11:13, Paul writes concerning this order that God, not man, created. If this order is followed, peace and clear thinking follow. If this order is rejected, confusion follows and deception. Note that because of this disorder in the Garden of Eden, Eve was deceived:

“and I wish you to know that of every man the head is the Christ, and the head of a woman is the husband, and the head of Christ is God” (Young’s Literal Translation)

“And it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived, and sin was the result” (1 Timothy 2:14 New Living Translation).

It’s apparent that somewhere in the original sin scenario Eve departed from Adam’s headship, was tempted by Satan and deceived.

Grown Men Acting Badly

The word “submission,” which some have grown to despise, simply means “protection.” Unfortunately, because many men have no real understanding of what it is to love their wives (or treat women in general with respect) their wives rebel. They often feel unprotected and rather than revere their husband, as Scripture commands, they end up despising him, if not openly, then secretly. Divorce is often the result. To our discredit, some men have overlooked the following submission Scripture found in Ephesians 5:21: “Being subject one to another, in the fear of Christ.” This doesn’t remove the man’s responsibility as the head, but it does demand that he willingly listen lovingly to his wife’s expressions because she may be right in the final analysis.

The point of this is any of us who despise the authority that God has placed over us – whether it’s in the home, the church or society – become targets for Satanic deception. When a society as a whole begins to do this, God gives us a “spirit of stupidity,” and we ultimately, self-destruct. If you think this isn’t true of America, you’re drinking the Kool-Aid!

If authority is acting badly, it follows that those who would look to them will likely act badly as well. Think of Bill Clinton’s sexual activities in the Oval Office. The nation, as whole, took a dive in the wrong direction following these revelations. Abuse of any kind, physical or verbal, is unacceptable behavior. Sexual veneration by men and women soon turns to hate because real love is not based solely on physical attraction. This has caused some to turn to bisexual preferences, and in some cases, strictly homosexual. What a tragedy!

The absence of fatherhood, as noted by the burgeoning statistics that underscore its impact, has shown repeatedly that it fosters more crime, prison time, educational failure, drug use, porn addiction, assaults, murder, rape, and the list goes on (see statistics at The fatherhood authority question is not in question.

Self-Acceptance or Self-Rejection?

I know it’s popular to accept everyone’s feelings about who they think they are or were meant to be. This is indeed based off feelings and not biological/physiological reality. The question is not who we think we are but who God made us to be. This is only reasonable, according to the Bible. In Romans 1:26-28, Paul clearly spells out what is natural in sexual relationships and what is not. He says in exchanging the truth (about God) for a lie people were darkened in their thinking. In other words, they became confused. In rejecting who God made them to be, they rejected themselves!

Satan’s game plan is always to disrupt God’s order. While God’s direction from heaven is peaceful and sensible, Satan’s plan, from beneath, is hellish and confusing:

This [superficial] (Satanic – emphasis mine) wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly (secular), natural (unspiritual), even demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder [unrest, rebellion] and every evil thing and morally degrading practice17 But the wisdom from above is first pure [morally and spiritually undefiled], then peace-loving [courteous, considerate], gentle, reasonable [and willing to listen], full of compassion and good fruits. It is unwavering, without [self-righteous] hypocrisy [and self-serving guile]. 18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness (spiritual maturity) is sown in peace by those who make peace [by actively encouraging goodwill between individuals]” (James 3:15-18 Amp).

In answer to the title of this blog, The Unrelenting Attack on Masculinity – Why? can be summed and up this way: God Almighty, the LORD Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit decided in eternity past that the Godhead, Who contains both male and female characteristics (Genesis 1:27), would establish an order to be followed so that humankind could be blessed, prosper and find peace. God the Father wanted to express Himself and identify Himself through every individual He created. He is a Father who loves but disciplines every person He accepts (Hebrews 12:6). Cults and New Age teachings often attempt to replace the Father God with a “mother god” who majors in compromise. Most often you’ll find no teaching in these groups on the cross of Christ because this cross demands a death to selfishness (Luke 9:23).

To the degree that we accept the truth that God created His established order of male and female, to that degree we find our true identity. Satan, on the other hand, hates humankind and does everything in his power to pervert this plan by twisting God’s intent in His creation – the reflection of Himself and all His glory in human beings. Since Father God has chosen to express Himself through true masculinity and His established order, the attack on masculinity is an attack on God’s design, resulting in disorder and chaos.
