There is a plague among us of biblical proportions.
No, it’s not locusts, frogs or fiery hail, although its impact is almost as great. It strikes people of all ages, and it’s a killer. It’s brain/mental disorders.
This insightful article by David Kupelian sheds light on this monstrous problem.
Millions of Americans are Snapping
David Kupelian is an award-winning journalist, managing editor of WND and editor of Whistleblower magazine. A widely read online columnist, he is also the best-selling author of The Marketing of Evil and How Evil Works.
Terrorism. Chaos. Fear of the future. In the age of Obama, America is undergoing a “fundamental transformation” – that much everyone knows.
But what few seem to realize about this transformation is that the sheer stress of living in today’s America is driving tens of millions to the point of illness, depression and self-destruction. Consider the following trends:
- Suicide has surpassed car crashes as the leading cause of injury death for Americans. Even more disturbing, in the world’s greatest military, more U.S. soldiers died last year by suicide than in combat;
- Fully one-third of the nation’s employees suffer chronic debilitating stress, and more than half of all “millennials” (18 to 33 year olds) experience a level of stress that keeps them awake at night, including large numbers diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder.
- Shocking new research from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that one in five of all high-school-aged children in the United States has been diagnosed with ADHD, and likewise a large new study of New York City residents shows, sadly, that one in five preteens – children aged six to 12 – have been medically diagnosed with either ADHD, anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder;
- New research concludes that stress renders people susceptible to serious illness, and a growing number of studies now confirm that chronic stress plays a major role in the progression of cancer, the nation’s second-biggest killer. The biggest killer of all, heart disease, which causes one in four deaths in the U.S., is also known to have a huge stress component;
- Incredibly, 11 percent of all Americans aged 12 and older, are currently taking SSRI antidepressants – those highly controversial, mood-altering psychiatric drugs with the FDA’s “suicidality” warning label and alarming correlation with school shooters. Women are especially prone to depression, with a stunning 23 percent of all American women in their 40s and 50s – almost one in four – now taking antidepressants, according to a major study by the CDC;
- Add to that the tens of millions of users of all other types of psychiatric drugs, including (just to pick one) the 6.4 million American children between 4 and 17 diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Ritalin or similar psycho-stimulants. Throw in the 28 percent of American adults with a drinking problem, that’s more than 60 million, plus the 22 million using illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens and inhalants, and pretty soon a picture emerges of a nation of drug-takers, with hundreds of millions dependent on one toxic substance or another – legal or illegal – to “help” them deal with the stresses and problems of life.
By the way, things are no better over the pond – and may be worse, according to one major study that concluded almost 40 percent of Europeans are plagued by mental illness.
What on earth is going on? Why isn’t medical science – and for that matter all of our incredible scientific and technological innovations in every area of life – reducing our stress and lightening our load? Why doesn’t the almost-magical availability of the world’s accumulated knowledge, thanks to the Internet, make us more enlightened and happy? The sins of the fathers
Generational sin has caught up with us. Daily our ministry – http://www.transformationranch.org – hears the cries of parents of parents telling us “something is wrong with my child.” Most have tried psychiatric therapy, therapeutic drugs and whatever else might help. Some of these things help, but this problem is greater than most, tearing at the fabric of life across this country and the world, as Kupelian has so succinctly pointed out. Granted, for many people these drugs are a lifesaver and not a life-taker, but truthfully, is there an entire generation of people succumbing to mental illnesses that can’t be dealt with by anything but psychoactive drugs?
Even our churches are filled with people on these drugs, so this plague is not limited to people who don’t believe. The problem in most cases is either the churches or ill equipped to deal with their own people, the churches’ counseling doesn’t go deeply enough, or people are sent to a psychiatrist down the street out of desperation. A friend of mine used to jokingly quip, “Jesus and Prozac – what a combination!”
God warned us of generational curses that would come unless they were stopped by the power of Jesus’ Blood and the His Cross. Much of America ignores God and tramples on His Word under the guise of freedom because a minority of people in the 60s screamed, “No fair allowing your Jesus in the public arena!” Since then, ungodly legal decisions, one after the other, over the course of 50 years, have stripped this country of wisdom for its leaders and lawmakers. Romans 1 says, in effect, that God will send us a “spirit of stupidity” if we fail to acknowledge Him first and foremost, “worshipping the creature rather than the Creator.” Curses are real. They follow generational lines and can affect many areas of life from finances to mental illness (see Deuteronomy 27 and 28 to understand blessings and cursings).
Who Switched Off My Brain?
The good news is many brilliant brain researchers are finding that the brain can be rewired to think differently without drugs. Among them are Dr. Caroline Leaf, author of “Who Switched Off My Brain?” and Dr. Paul Hegstrom, founder of Life Skills International, both Christians with amazing insights into how the Bible can be used to rewire the brain so that even its physical attributes are changed! Brain scan images are proving the change occurs.
Dr. Leaf: “God is the Creator of the Universe and is the Author of Science. Since God is the Author of the Bible, the Bible is therefore the ultimate authority in any scientific matters. The study of science is therefore the study of God’s handiwork and is a way of admiring His Creation. God, the Creator, is the One to be worshipped, not the Creation. The Creation, however, reflects the Glory of God and points to His Divine attributes.
“…Since the Mind controls the Body and by extension the Physical Realm, it can be said that Mind controls Matter. The Mind is not what the Brain does. Rather, the Brain does the bidding of the Mind. Thinking, an activity of the Mind, affects the Brain in very specific ways and on many levels: systemic, structural, functional, chemical, electromagnetic, molecular, and genetic and even quantum physics.
Quantum Physics and the Mind
There is growing evidence that biological systems operate at the level of Quantum Physics. The Quantum Zeno effect has been described within the Science of Quantum Physics. When applied to Neuroscience, the Quantum Zeno effect implies that the Brain becomes what you focus on. Focus is directed attention and is a function of the Mind. Thus, Quantum Physics supports the notion of Mind over Matter.
There is mounting recent evidence for Neuroplasticity, that is, the ability of the Brain to change according to experience. The anatomy and physiology of the Human Brain is much more malleable and plastic than we once thought. This shows that the Brain changes according to how we use it. The saying ‘Use it or lose it,’ which is usually applied to the Musculo-skeletal system, can now be applied to the Brain as well. Thinking, a Mind activity, effects gene expression. Gene expression produces proteins. Proteins are fashioned into structural elements and enzymes (biological catalysts), which change Brain anatomy (structure) and physiology (function). Therefore thinking changes Brain structure and function.”
Dr. Hegstrom has through personal experience, as well as more than 25 years of research of the brain, proven the physical brain can be changed. Hegstrom says FIXATION (arrested development) stems from wounds of childhood under the age of 18. He says there are five main reasons development stops:
1) Rejection (only 1 of 5 that can take place inutero)
3) Molestation (80% close family members & 20% outside the family structure)
4) Emotional Abuse
5) Physical Abuse
Hegstrom says woundings will freeze emotions and development for the rest of a person’s life. The brain will stay “frozen” until death, if emotions are NOT dealt with and restarted. Serotonin, dopamine (neurotransmitter) and epinephrine (hormone secreted by adrenal glands) are three chemicals in the body intended to work in harmony in an emotionally healthy child before the age of puberty. If woundedness occurs early, normal chemical flow (which aids in healthy emotional development) is replaced by constant, abnormal “adrenaline drip,” which continues throughout life until healing is achieved.
Based on the scholarship of these two people alone, can you see how a lack of fathering, nurturing and the true knowledge and application of God’s Word’s could produce “brain freeze” and a deep need in people to experience the depths of God’s love in their hearts and not just acquire a head full Bible of knowledge?
Healing the mentally disturbed
Jesus came to save us from our sins and ourselves. The Scripture says he went about doing good and healing all who were physically sick and mentally ill:
“In two places Matthew speaks of “lunatics” (from the Greek word meaning “moon-struck” because mental aberrations intensified during a full moon or luna in Latin). The first passage, Mt 4:24, was just before the Sermon on the Mount: “His fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics, and he cured them” (all Scripture quotations are from the New American Bible). Here Matthew includes all kinds of illnesses and distinguishes between mentally ill people (lunatics) and possessed people. Jesus heals every kind of illness, including the mentally ill” (excerpt from “Is there a Scriptural Approach to Mental Health” by Robert T. Sears, SJ, PhD, www.familytreehealing.com.
The power of the “Old Rugged Cross”
We Christians are often naive about the power of the cross to heal and transform the mentally-emotionally afflicted. When Jesus died, His Blood was shed to cleanse the past and future of everyone who would receive it. Hell was defeated, the grave overcome, physical healing was made available, and our souls (our selves) were given healing for oppression from torment beyond the scope and ability of humankind to deal with it. Faith is required to access this amazing power that is available to every hungry person on Planet Earth. There is nothing this Great God and Savior Jesus Christ cannot do, and that includes the severing of the ties to generational curses of the mind!
It is awesome to know that through this one act we have been forgiven once for all sins and have passed from death to life without condemnation (John 5:24). Upfront we need to understand the Blood of Jesus is for SINS, the cross for the SIN nature and the power of God through the spoken word that brings victory over tormenting spirits. These spirits will attack as long as they have something to work with, but once their ground of operation is removed (our fleshly responses), they have to leave. Obviously, sometimes we must command them to! Inner healing often uncovers this ground of operation that remains hidden as long as we are in darkness about it (not aware of it), thus giving Satan and his demons room to work. The Holy Spirit gives us light! God in His sovereignty and love may “set up” situations that cause us to see these problems so He can heal us.
Most Christians understand God’s forgiveness for the Penalty of SINS (eternal life) because of the cross but have often not been taught that it via the work of the cross Christ also conquered the Power of SIN, thereby giving us victory over it. This power was broken because Jesus Christ condemned sin in the flesh (Rom. 8:3) or the Adamic nature in us that we inherited from the first male human. It is very important to understand that the SIN nature produces sins. Trying to get victory over habitual sins is like fruitlessly trimming the branches of a tree (sins) when the tree (sin nature) has to be cut down at the roots to kill it. Not comprehending this produces a continuous cycle of sins, condemnation, repentance, a temporary victory and the repeat of this agonizing experience. The sin nature cannot be improved on or “reformed.” Jesus said what is flesh is flesh and what is spirit is spirit. In other words, the flesh doesn’t change — you can’t reform it. That’s man’s answer — God’s answer is crucifixion!
In our ministry, we employ many tools to try our best to help those who come to us. Sometimes simple prayer works, and sometimes it doesn’t do all that’s needed. Other work may be need to be done — to counsel, dig into the hidden roots of their behavior, including the sins of the father, help people rid themselves of ungodly beliefs, and even cast away evil that has been tormenting them their entire lives! Through many years of Bible study, experience and prayer, we feel equipped, but there is no denying that it is the power of God that does the work. It is His Presence that heals the brokenhearted and sets the captives free (Luke 4:18)!
To be clear, we find many difficulties or sins in a client’s past that are affecting them today because we reap what we sow (Gal. 6:7). God forgives our sins, but the consequences may continue until they are reckoned dead on His cross (Rom. 6:11). People still being affected by ancestral sins can have those severed once and for all. Our Lord Jesus paid a legal debt for us including the sins (iniquities) of the fathers and others within one’s family line. What a mighty God we serve!
